Former Astronaut Visits California Space Grant Consortium Headquarters

California Space Grant Consortium staff had the pleasure of meeting former astronaut Millie Hughes-Fulford, Ph.D. She gave the keynote address at the BIOCOM Science Education Gala on Saturday, November 22nd, 2008. Dr. Hughes-Fulford flew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia in 1991 on Mission STS-40 Spacelab Life Sciences (SLS 1) as a payload specialist.

NASA ESMD Summer 2009 Internship Application Now Available!

The application process for the 2009 ESMD Summer Internships has begun. Interested students must first go to http://education.ksc.nasa.gov/esmdspacegrant/ to find ESMD Internship opportunities and the password to access the ESMD Intern Application. You can then link to the ESMD Intern Application at https://secureworkgroups.grc.nasa.gov/esmd-spswg.

The application is open November 17, 2008 – February 1, 2009. Applications must be complete, including transcripts and letters of recommendation. Every student is required to complete an online application. The transcripts and letters of recommendation may be electronically attached to the application or mailed in hard copy. Hard copies must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2009.

Students must meet the minimum requirements to be eligible for an ESMD internship. These requirements include the following:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to participate. Proof of citizenship will be required if selected.
  • Age 18 or older
  • Community college, undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply
  • Minimum of 30 credit hours/45 quarter hours completed
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. university, college, or community college.

Interested in Year-Round Internships?

NASA’s Education Associates program offers college and university students and faculty the opportunity to experience science and technology in the unique environment of NASA. Participants will gain hands-on experience at NASA Ames Research Center in Santa Clara, California working with NASA scientists, engineers and program managers on a NASA project. California Space Grant Director Heads Panel at NASA Future Forum

California Space Grant Consortium Director Dr. Michael Wiskerchen moderated the Inspiration Panel at the NASA Future Forum in San Jose, CA on May 14, 2008. Panelists (from left to right): Mr. Peter Levy, Director of Strategic Development for Curriki; Ms. Diane Demée-Benoit, Director of the Innovation in Education Project, Commonwealth Club of California; Dr. Steven Beckwith, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, University of California; and Dr. Joyce Winterton, Assistant Administrator, Office of Education, NASA Headquarters. The discussion centered on how to enhance interest and performance in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and related careers.
